Walt Whitman the Poet, the Prophet, and the Patriot Essay Example For Students

Walt Whitman: the Poet, the Prophet, and the Patriot Essay Before his poetry, Whitman lived in a mall home on Long Island here he grew up with his eight siblings, four of whom were disturbed or psychotic. The father was unheard of and the mother, unable to fend for the entire family, so at a young age Walt became the true father of his family (Bloom 159). Walt Whitman threaded his poetry with his political beliefs, poetic uncertainty, and his strong patriotism that all contribute to the deep, wondrous and mostly undefined meanings of his poems. In a time of chaos and distraught, Whitman used his poetry to reflect his strong and Influential opinions of societal movement. Whitman first anthology titled Leaves of Grass was Influenced by the democratic presidency of Lincoln in the sasss. Progress was the topic of the casual cafe setting of this time and Whitman, a commoner, took these ideas and weaved them into his poetry with an optimistic flare. We will write a custom essay on Walt Whitman: the Poet, the Prophet, and the Patriot specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now He used his democratic views and hopes for improvements as a base for much of his poetry: The ideas of progress became the principal of the universe-?as we look up from our provisional Piggish we behold the orbit forms of a benevolent, self purifying cosmos-?as we lower our gaze the vistas UT over the continent darken somewhat and are populated with villages, rivers, and fields of wheat, factories, mechanics, farmers, patient mothers, small property holders, town meetings-?a nobility if evanescent envisioned myth of social life. Chase The Theory of America 55) Whitman used his work to emphasize the idea that all citizens of America can improve, and that this essence of life applies to everyone not only the poor, but the wealthy and the officials as well. Many did not agree with this, as It Is Just a view, but the Improvements of the sasss directly convert to our society. A good poet teaches his readers something, but a great poet touches the lives of its readers and allows the chang e to permeate through society. The astonishment of this era by some of the most influential speakers in history is seen through Whitman words describing his own poetry. A great poem is for ages and ages in common for all degrees and complexions and all departments and sects and for a woman as much as a man and a man as much as a woman (Whitman Leaves of Grass 6). These words are from the preface to his most renowned anthology, Leaves of Grass, and prepare the reader for his references. Whitman uses equality for the basis of many poems because it is such a broad topic that can be explained in so many ways. His poem Proud Music of the Storm reveals how he views the mistreated: Proud music of the storm! Blast that careers so free, whistling across the parries! Strong hum of forest tree-tops! Wind of the mountains! You serenades of phantoms, with instruments alert, Blending, with Natures rhythms, all the tongues of nations; You chords left as by vast composers! You choruses! You formless, free, religious dances! Your from the Orient! You undone of rivers, roar of pouring cataracts; You sounds from distant guns, with galloping cavalry! Echoes of camps, with all the different bugle-calls! Trooping tumultuous, filling the midnight late, blending me powerless, Entering my lonesome slumber-chamber Why have seized me? (Leaves of Grass 1871-72 323) In the poem, Whitman references the oppression of colored people during his time. He uses an extended metaphor to represent the music as the oppressed people, and the storm as the Civil War. As Whitman describes the music and all its interpretations, he shows how the colored people are different but still beneficial and helpful as much s the white people in society. The poem progresses from a gleeful and embracing mood, to a gloomy and depressive mood, which shows how campaigning for rights can turn violent and out of control very quickly, but can also turn out as a renaissance for man if control. The Civil War was a time of great surprise to many as the outcome was not expected. .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73 , .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73 .postImageUrl , .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73 , .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73:hover , .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73:visited , .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73:active { border:0!important; } .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73:active , .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73 .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0f2ede98b7933abbddcdde0446f11a73:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Bignell Jonathan EssayMuch like ones life, Whitman poetry mirrors the twists, turns, and unpredictability of life in his poetry while keeping the reader engaged with relatable speakers. Only through the failures did Whitman find his most genius talent. To many, Whitman works do not seem like an accident at all because they are crafted with intelligence and published in perfection, but some see Whitman as so much more than a poet, and that poetry is a mere ability of his, To read Whitman was to know a man who made himself out to be now visionary, now sage, now prophet, often all three at once and only incidentally a poet (Pearce 1 . This author was not alive during Whitman lifetime but he feels he can relate so well to the morals he gets across in his poetry. Whitman did not only write for the public to experience his Houghton, but he also wrote for himself, as he expressed himself in and about his poetry. He used his poetry as a mask for his identity, making it seem more relatable to commoners. He sacrificed himself to his own image which he meant to be an all inclusive image of man. He postured and posed, acted (sometimes behind the scenes) as his own public-relations man, sounded now a barbaric yap, now a lyric cry, now an epic salutation, now a prayerful meditation, as his sense of the occasion demanded (Pearce 1). His poetry provided an outlet for him. He pretended to be all of society in his poems. He could pretend to be anyone behind his literature. In most of his poems, he takes on the role of outcast or a minor. In the poem, A March in the Ranks Hard- Preset, and the Road Unknown he gives the reader a sense of pity for the speaker, A March in the ranks hard-preset, and the road unknown;/A route through a heavy woof, with muffled steps in the darkness;/Our army foiled with loss severe, and the sullen remnant retreating; (Drum-Taps 1865 277). Whitman uses the metaphor of a military to convey an idea of depression. The working class, whom are mistreated, struggle to find their way through life. Although Whitman was financially well off, he adopts the uses dialect of the time and social class. Whitman unbelievable ability to hide himself behind his work creates way for his literature to infect the hearts of an entire population. He wore many masks in his poems but always revealed his true patriotism. In Whitman time social reforms were everyones focus. Whether it was the whites in the north opposing or the blacks in the south promoting the reforms, the entire nation was battling. A strong force that kept people sane was literature. The Americans of all nations at any time upon the earth have probably the least poetical nature. The United States themselves are essentially the greatest poem. In the history of the earth hitherto the largest and most stirring appear tame and orderly to ampler largeness and stir (Whitman Preface to Leaves of Grass 3). Of all nations the United States with veins full of poetical stuff most need poets and will doubtless have the greatest and use them the greatest (Whitman Preface to Leaves of Grass 5). Whitman describes the dedication of the American poets almost as serving their country. It is literature that keeps countries moving through hard times. One of Whitman most iconic poems was written for the funeral for a man who made revolutionary changes in America. For Lincoln death, Whitman wrote a solemn but patriotic poem titled When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Blooms. Poetry reflecting death is usually dark and ominous, but he gives the poem an optimistic and beautiful essence: When lilacs last in the Dooryard blooms And the great star early drops in the western sky in the night, I mourned, and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring. Ever-returning spring, trinity sure to me you bring, Lilacs blooming perennial and drooping star in the west, And the thought of him I love. (Whitman Leaves of Grass 525). Whitman expresses his love for Lincoln and all that he did. .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52 , .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52 .postImageUrl , .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52 , .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52:hover , .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52:visited , .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52:active { border:0!important; } .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52:active , .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52 .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7c4da43f3c7886206d80f93fd908ce52:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Compare two poems from different cultures and traditions EssayThe president made some of the most influential changes to America. The lilacs are symbolic to his achievements and like a perennial, they will always come back. The time of day is significant because the night shows the changing of dark and that a new day is coming full of light and different experiences. Whitman dedication to his country drove him to write poetry about one of the countys most momentous leaders. While traveling Whitman complex, undefined, and breath-taking literature, one minds that his poetry compliments his political beliefs, ever changing character, and his dedication to America. As a strong democrat, Whitman believed in the institution of freedom to all citizens in America. He also used his poetry in all different voices to communicate the feelings of people who normally do not have a say. Lastly, Whitman love for his country influenced his work and left him distraught with the death of President Lincoln. People live and die but like Lincoln, Whitman left a legacy for every age, color, class and gender to hold with them as they travel throughout their life.

The car industry brought its decline on itself. Comment, with Essay

The car industry brought its decline on itself. Comment, with reference to the period since 1960 - Essay Example The government tried to play its role in curing the demise of the car industry in Britain. However, it ended up making decisions and policies that adversely affected the state of the British car industry. They include the steel rationing scheme, improper investments and development to support mergers, and unsuccessful regionalization policies. On the other hand, the management practices prevalent in the industry did not help its condition either. There was unsystematic authoritarian leadership, poor integration after mergers, and other improper strategies that also played their role in bringing down the growing car manufacturing industry of Britain. (Church, 1994) This paper will shed light over the ineffective government policies and the poor management that, together, led to the demise of the British car industry. It also discusses some specific cases and examples from the history of Britain’s auto industry and points out where the mistakes were made and how management could have avoided them. Some may argue that the government’s economic policies could have had an adverse affect on the development of the industry. The factors that may have contributed towards the meltdown of the auto industry in UK may include the steel rationing scheme, unsuccessful regionalisation policies by the government and the failure to maintain the development of the newly funded mergers. After the success of the auto industry in the UK, in 1945 the multinationals expanded their factories in order to increase the productivity. The government supported this effort made by the multinationals as it would increase employment in the surrounding areas. But the scarcity of resources such as steel kept the government to keep the supply under their control also known as the steel rationing scheme; this prevented the firms to produce the maximum output. The changes in energy

Ethical Question - Essay Example I will then head straight to the university’s head office to seek assistance. Since, it is prudent for the university’s management to be aware of what has transpired in the institution premises because they are accountable of everything and everyone within its confinements. I would then call the nearest police station and inform them of what has transpired and the location of the accident. This is to prove the accident was not intentional besides showing that I am ready to face the consequences. The management will then try as much as possible to locate the car’s owner with the registration number, which I took with the intention of discussing with owner on how to resolve the issue. Together with him or her, we would discus amicably the best way besides agreeing to cater for any caused damages. The reason for these actions will encompass upholding my dignity and ethics that I normally keep all through my life (Jennings 30). Secondly, I will be adhering to the already set laws that govern the state and dictate diverse restitutions, which any offender ought to observe. This is to maintain good and health interrelationships with the owner of the car despite both of being strangers to each other (Jennings 30). WC Mod 7 WA Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

WC Mod 7 WA - Research Paper Example Although most crimes are linked to male counterparts than female this has been attributed mostly to the fact that men are typically more aggressive than their female counterparts. The impact of these challenges hinders efficient and effective administration of justice. In addition it is a basis of stereotypes that causes a lot of psychological harm not only to the affected individual but the general population that views it self as minority. The complex relationship between criminology and gender is attributed to the fact that relatively little attention has been dedicated to women in the justice system because of their small percentage in the system. This explanation fall short in a number of ways, first is that while women are underrepresented as victims, workers and offender, the number of women falling into criminal activity is still rising. Secondly practices that negatively affect the men have an effect on women as well for instance women are the ones who bear the responsibility of child-care when the male counterpart is imprisoned. Additionally while the criminal system is all male based gender is relevant when talking about male involvement in the system as well as female. It is however worth noticing that significant developments have been witnessed and currently discussing gender and crime is definitely an easy task now as compared to how it was thirty years back. Criminology is a wide concept that requires a holistic approach and to establish the link of gender and crime and the overall effect it has on criminology and justice system. Gender plays a critical role in understanding and resolving issues of related to crime. Criminology takes into consideration the theories of Marxism, feminist and critical theory as crimes originate from inequalities. In the 19th century Italian criminologist known as Cesare Lombroso developed the theory of

Impact of Cultural Background on Domestic Violence

Impact of Cultural Background on Domestic Violence Domestic violence is an issue which occurs across all cultures, religions, ages, genders and in all countries. It affects many individuals and occurs in many various forms including physical, verbal, emotional and psychological abuse. Domestic violence has a range of definitions and there is no official globally agreed upon official definition to explain it, however in terms of the UK a commonly accepted definition of domestic violence provided by The Association of Chief Police Officers’ (ACPO) and The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) defines domestic violence as â€Å"Any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (Psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults aged 18 and over, who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality (family members are defined as mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister and grandparents, whether directly related, in-laws, or step-family)† (ACPO, 2008a: 7). This research project will investigate and explore the different aspects of a victim’s cultural background which may offer knowledge and insight as to why women in a domestically abusive relationship choose to not leave or seek any help or advice. For the purpose of this study, a qualitative approach was carried out, using open ended interviews with former victims of domestic abuse as a method to gather and analyse data. By conducting open ended interviews, direct access was gained into the experiences and perspectives of the individuals whom were interviewed. It provided further use by assisting in understanding the topic and collectively gathering an in-depth exploration and depiction (Silverman, 2010). This particular topic is explored and researched since it has been a much neglected area of research within academic literature for a long time and has not been explored in much depth in relation to a cultural view and perspective. Literature on the cultural context of domest ic violence has been limited until recently (Kulwicki, 2002). Furthermore, this area is quite under researched and is hence a topic which needs broadening and developing upon in several ways and thus it may offer insight into the issues needed to be addressed and the implications this has for policy makers and practitioners. Rather than exploring other commonly researched aspects relating to domestic abuse, instead a different focus is researched into the exploration of the obstacles that prevent victims’ inaction and how cultural pressures affect this process. Factors such as religious beliefs, cultural traditions and attitudes, social networks, and help-seeking behaviours all affect how a victim will take action against domestic abuse (Shiu-Thornton, Senturia, Sullivan, 2005). In particular, the religious backgrounds in South Asian culture have been quite neglected and under researched, often overlooking Sikh and Hindu communities. The research relating to religious backgr ounds of victims of domestic abuse is quite limited, therefore more insight will be provided to address this issue and to shed some light on this focus. Although there has been much previous research carried out on domestic violence in the past, the work that has been carried out based on a cultural perspective is quite limited. In relation to research on domestic violence and South Asian culture, there has not been a lot of exploration or depth in this area, and the research that has been done in regards to this specific topic is mainly based on US context and on immigrant women of South Asian background. Therefore this is not as relevant to the UK and British Asian women, thus this research study will address this topic and expand upon the current literature and research. Furthermore, there are also no studies of domestic violence in UK South Asian communities that provide statistics of the occurrence of domestic violence within this community, which is a major limitation that needs to be addressed. Statistics and data on this area would be highly beneficial and would show what problems or issues need to be addressed and what the m ain concerns are so that policy makers and practitioners can do their best to solve any current issues. Also, there have been no current literature or studies that have been conducted in this topic to keep it updated in general. Most of the work that has been done is from a few years back and the statistics provided from studies in America on domestic violence in South Asian culture is from a decade ago or more which shows that statistics and data on this type of abuse in South Asian communities needs to be updated and kept current to contemporary times. Thus, this research study will provide a more contemporary exploration and analysis of domestic abuse in South Asian communities, which will be based on UK context. The research that has been carried out in this study is important as it will contribute to its field of research and expand and develop upon a more specific area of domestic abuse. It will better and improve upon the topic of domestic abuse in more depth relating to a cultural perspective, including religious aspects and perspectives as well. This research is thus important to the topic of domestic abuse since it engages in a more focused and specific view of the topic of domestic abuse. This research will show the perspectives of South Asian culture and the religions within this culture on the status and role of women and its views on domestic abuse. Furthermore, it will show how this culture may present obstacles to those in domestically abuse relationships to seek help or leave their violent situation. The research focus that has been conducted is interesting as it studies and delves into the cultural aspects of victims of domestic abuse and how this may prevent them from leaving or hesitating to seek help; hence this study will fill in the gaps of academic literature and research by exploring this specific approach and will offer more understanding and knowledge to its field of research. In this research study, religion in South Asian culture is also explored to see if it has any effect on women who are in domestically abusive relationships or to see if it plays a contributory role for women to take action in domestically abuse relationships. This research study includes qualitative data in the form of interviews which were mostly conducted at South Asian refuges for victims of domestic abuse, and by which access was successfully granted. These interviews were based on the experiences of three women of South Asian cultural background who were former victims of domestic abuse. The three women who were interviewed were of Sikh and Hindu religious backgrounds; two of the women were Sikh, whilst the other was Hindu. All three women voluntary consented to be a part of this study and thus provided details and a background of their individual experiences of their former situations and the barriers they faced when deciding to take action. They also provided an account of their cultural traditions and attitudes which may have played a contributing role in their situations and their experiences. This research study will include and provide a literature review of the topic of domestic abuse, focusing on South Asian cultural views and perspectives of the status of women and its perception of domestic violence. This will also encompass religious stances of domestic violence as well, focusing on both Sikh and Hindu religion. Next, it will provide information on the methodology that was carried out and adopted in this research study. This section will also include and discuss the advantages, weaknesses and limitations of the approach used and the research method that was implemented. Then, it will provide a summary and detail of the findings and analysis of the data, using thematic analysis to establish the common themes which have arisen in the interviews. Finally, there will be a conclusion to finish with, which will provide an overall summary of the findings of the research study. It will also discuss the implications of the findings and how this relates to policy makers and p ractitioners.

The Trade War between America (USA) and the European Union (EU) :: essays papers

Chiquita Brands International Inc. is best known as the world’s number one distributor of banana’s, which account for more than half of its sales. For the past decade, Chiquita’s sales have dropped dramatically and the company is now on the verge of bankruptcy. Currently, Chiquita is trying to avoid filing for a Chapter 11 by attempting a major financial restructuring of their debt. There are many factors that have contributed to the company’s downward spiral, although all of these factors are linked to the trade barriers imposed by the European Union on banana imports. The European Union enacted import restrictions on banana’s in 1993, and just recently, is attempting to revise the old regime in order to comply with the World Trade Organization. The EU is preparing to introduce a new import system dubbed â€Å"first-come first-served† which they believe will be a WTO compatible system. Chiquita filed a lawsuit in January, 2001 against the European Union seeking reparations in the amount of $525 million for their losses that resulted from the old biased import system (Palmer). Chiquita is just one of many companies that were affected by this biased import regime, but some other companies still managed to work around the import restrictions. Chiquita’s rivals, Dole Food and Fresh Del Monte, although bruised as well by the European restrictions and falling banana profits, are in much better shape. Both have managed to increase their market share in Europe, largely at Chiquita’s expense (Alden). Chiquita, however, sought out and fought a political battle against the European Union with the United States government backing them. The old EU import regime was not only an issue for the companies involved, but for the United States as a whole, since it affected banana’s and other agricultural products sold in the US. The regime initially was enacted in 1993, and was later ruled in 1997 to not be in compliance with the World Trade Organization (PR Newswire). The regime was designed in part to protect less efficient banana growers in former European colonies. Chiquita’s management has complained for years that the policies of the EU have cost the company millions by favoring banana’s from Caribbean producers in former European colonies. The EU’s rules were judged to discriminate in favor of growers in EU territories and the Caribbean at the expense of Latin American producers and U.

Equality and Diversity Pttls

and Discuss issues of equality and diversity and ways to promote inclusion with your learners. Review other points of referral available to meet the potential needs of learners. To fully understand the above we really need to understand the terms. Equality means to be equal before law and without any discrimination. This is particularly important to minorities and to the poor. Through equality every one has the right to fair choices. Diversity is used to describe political entities who have identifiable differences in their background and lifestyles including ethnic minorities. Inclusion means to meet your learners needs, which some may have more than others. These needs should be appropriately met to enable full participation in the classroom. The main issue related to equality and diversity would be exclusion. If the tutor does not meet the needs for those with a different background then it can often end with the student feeling not only left out but to feel neglected and can lead to missed lessons and also feeling that they don’t belong their. The tutor should be committed to providing equal opportunities for each of his/her students. You should demonstrate your commitment to equal opportunities through everything you say and do in your work with adult students. †Ã‚   (1993:13). Promotion of equality within the classroom is not only an expectation but a requirement by law. ‘All students must feel that they are positively and equally valued and accepted, and that their efforts to learn are recognised, and judged without bias. It is not enough that they are tolerated. They must feel that they, and the groups to which they belong (e. g. ender, social-class or attainment groups) are fully and equally accepted and valued by you, and the establishment in which you work’. Petty (1998:69) To promote inclusion within your classroom you will need to respond positively to the diverse needs of your learners. How you communicate with your learners is essential ensuring learners can understand what you are saying. Ensuring body language and comments are appropriate and are no offensive. Teaching methods are also important and you will need to make sure that your methods are varied and support all learning styles. Ensuring your learners can all participate is also important, therefore not excluding any of them. Allowing your learners to establish working relationships effectively, ensuring everyone is included and that the room is accessible and safe for people with sensory disabilities or lack of mobility. Additional support may be required to enable you to support equality and diversity this could be in the form of a learning support assistant, adapted resources, peer support, varied presentation. Although inclusion is about supporting your learners needs, it may not always be possible to do this without support for yourself. You should be aware of your limits of responsibility and know when and where to access support for both you and your learners. If you have a line manager then they should be your first point of contact. Your colleagues may be another point as they may have experienced something similar. It is your responsibility to find out what support is available for you. Supporting Equality and Diversity is extremely important and is also a legal requirement. When planning your lessons you should be taking this into account and structuring your lessons appropriately. If you are unsure you should be aware of your limits and seek advice from your line manager. If you don’t have a line manager you will need to get advice on who you should be asking for help and support. Petty G (1998), Teaching Today, United Kingdom: Nelson Thornes. American Pageant-13th Edition: Dbq 1

In 1606, hundreds of settlers embarked on a journey from England to the Virginia colony, in search of wealth and treasure. Although they experienced much destitution early on in their journey, they were able to transform their colony with the use of the indentured servants and slaves by basing their economy around tobacco. With tobacco, they were able to create an industry in which the colonists would depend on socially and economically. The journey for the new colonist was brutal. They were crammed onto ships, so communicable diseases spread very easily. There was little food, so many of them died of starvation. When they finally arrived, they were introduced to even more diseases. On top of starvation, and chronic diseases, some died in wars. The most common cause of death for the new colonist was famine. Some of the colonists said that there were never any Englishmen left in a foreign country in such misery as their newly discovered Virginia. After they reached Virginia, they were given contracts with various people who had already settled there. With the use of tobacco, they transformed their economy. The demand for tobacco products in Europe was increasing, and the Virginians knew it. The tobacco rush soon swept over Virginia. The father of the tobacco industry, John Rolfe, became an economic savior in 1612, when he perfected methods of raising and curing the pungent weed. The colonists now focused most of their attention, concentration, and energy on planting this demanded crop. They had created one of the first products to be marketed with name-brand advertising. The industry had now built the economic foundation for the colony of Virginia. However, intense tobacco farming depleted the rich Virginia soil. The vile weed would soon ruin the soil and eventually make it unfit for planting in subsequent years. Due to the barren lands after planting, there became an increased demand for large-acre plantations. When more tobacco was planted to fill the needs of the Europeans, there also became a need for more labor. A massive workforce was now needed to work the new tobacco plantations and this demand would soon be fulfilled with the use of forced laborers and indentured servants. The colonists now faced the problem of a greater need for labor. However, families procreated too slowly, the Native Americans died too quickly from disease, and slaves were too expensive. At the time, England had an abundance of displaced farmers in search of long term employment. These laborers, known as â€Å"indentured servants,† willingly rented out their work. They signed binding contracts to their masters, to work for a number of years to pay their passage. Approximately fifteen hundred indentured servants were coming from England, Scotland, and Ireland every year. These settlers also changed the colony of Virginia socially. When they first arrived, the population of Virginia was basically zero, excluding the Native Americans. Within 71 years, there were approximately two thousand black slaves and six thousand Christian indentured servants. The population had also reached forty thousand people. The tobacco plant was the main reason for the successful changes in the Virginia colony. The profit from the plant was the reason for the economically, and the increased population of the workers was the reason socially. Without the tobacco plant, there would have been such a significant change in the new Virginia colony.

Product and pricing essays

Product and pricing essays Nowadays, price-related promotion is a common topic in many markets. In addition, price-related promotions have been criticized in many published business literatures. In this essay, it will identify the range for reasons that price-related promotions might be used, why the firms spend budget on price-related promotions? In addition, if there are some good reasons of using price-related promotions, how it fulfills the objectives and what are the benefits of the price-related promotions? According to White (2002) the reasons of price-related promotion need to be considered as the purposes of the firms. The main reasons are to accelerate the distribution of quantity of the products, to attract new customers for the brands, to increase the awareness of the firms brands, and to encourage the loyalty of the exiting customers of the brands. Price-related promotion does not fulfill well on all the objectives which mentioned above, however it works well for some of them. There are some literatures points that the price-related promotion has not long-term effect for the brand maintenance. According to Ehrenberg, Hammond s subsequent sales or brand loyalty. It is because almost of the buyers, who buy the brand on promotions, are the brands long-term or loyal customers. It only few new customers are attracted by the promotion. Moreover, Ehrenberg, Hammond For the objective to attract new customers, price-related promotion is not so powerful. However, the achievement of price-related promotion on other objectives should not be ignored. According to White (2002) price promotion will not attract new buyers to a brand, but can increases short-term purchases by some the br ...

Why students should stay in college and graduate Essay

Why students should stay in college and graduate - Essay Example e know that in the coming years, jobs requiring a college degree are projected to grow twice as fast as jobs requiring no college experience," Obama said. "We will not fill those jobs or even keep those jobs here in America without the training offered by colleges." Statistical research also demonstrates that a person who goes to college usually earns more than a person who doesn’t, as median earnings for full-time workers more than 25 years old increased by over $20,000 for people who have college degrees vs. those who only have a high school diploma. Considering these facts, the necessity for students to stay in and graduate from college is imperative. Even with statistical research clearly demonstrating the need for students to stay in and graduate from college, the opportunity for increased quality of life cannot be underestimated. In my own life, I can see the challenges my father has faced. Since he lacked a college degree his career options were limited and needed to work many labor intensive jobs, including construction, to become financially established. His situation can be contrasted with that of my mother who attained a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was able to attain a position as a teacher and make a comparable salary to my father with less and arguably more rewarding work. While a college degree clearly offers increased career and salary options, it also is a chance to achieve personal betterment. Through the college experience students gain knowledge about the world that can help them find greater appreciation in art and culture. The opportunity to be exposed to and learn about unique cultures makes one more open-minded and accepting of different people and ideas. In conclusion, the necessity to attend and graduate from college is overwhelmingly clear. Statistical research demonstrates that people will college degrees have increased earning potential. Graduating from college also affords the chance to find a less strenuous and more fulfilling

Synthesis of Research Problem, Method, and Design-Hypothetical Designs Paper

Synthesis of Problem, Method, and Design-Hypothetical Designs - Research Paper Example These challenges, which include dishonesty and plausible misjudgments, threaten the quality of results obtained through this process. Certain measures have, however, been put in place, to ensure high quality, and error free results. There is little or no attention given to the efficiency and throughput of the crowdsourcing process or the integrity of the results obtained. It is argued that the numbers of task workers and tasks are always small, thereby, resulting in crowdsourcing techniques that are not conscious of the number of tasks, potential worker behavior and efficiency of the process. This research aims at proposing a crowdsourcing, result-improvement technique that is independent of task complexity and sizes and ensures result quality, integrity, as well as efficiency and throughput of the process. The hypothesis being studied in this case is that crowdsourcing result-improvement techniques that are task size and complexity independent ensures result integrity, quality, effi ciency as well as throughput. Hypothetical Designs Quantitative design This design will utilize experimental research method - methods that aim at maximizing replicability, generalizability, and objectivity of results; mostly concerned with prediction (Creswell, 2009). The focus will be to test several existing crowdsourcing techniques including r-Redundancy, v-Voting, and Vote Boosting techniques on a large number of tasks that will be handled by a large number of users. These techniques will be considered as experiment participants. The independent variable in this case would be the crowdsourcing techniques, including r-Redundancy, v-Voting, Vote Boosting techniques and the technique that this research will propose. The independent variables will be studied in two level; low task, less complex task level, and high number of tasks, and complex tasks level. Consequently, the dependent variables will be integrity, quality, efficiency as well as throughput. The experiment will be set in such a way that, the tasks set for testing, will have two definitive parameters including the accuracy of the tasks initial states and the number of options available per decision. 8 sets of 100,000 tasks with 3, 4, or 5 options and 75%, 85%, and 95% as the accuracy for the initial set tasks. There are about 4 to 10 decisions distributed normally. The user network or population tested also has two parameters including mean probability for committing errors and for dishonesty. Values of 3%, 6% and 20% are used for both dishonesty and making of errors. These probabilities were distributed exponentially over [0, 1] around their mean values. Simulations for about 40 input-aggregation functions with each one receiving one input are run repeatedly. For this experiment, the proposed quantitative hypothetical design is deemed to be extremely expensive even in the event that only few points in a parameter space are covered. Qualitative Design In this case, this research method will aim at understanding and discovering the perspectives, thoughts and experiences of previous researchers and participants in the same field in order to understand reality, purpose and meaning (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). The focus will be to review and evaluate literature on previous and current research
